Open the Pocket.. & the Denim Pattern at PSP

  • Open the fonts and minimize **or choose your own
  • (there are a great selection of Initials at both Dafont and at House of Lime )
  •
  • Move the Picture Tubes/Stitches to your PSP Files/Picture Tubes/ *New Folder (Embroidery) (If you intend to follow the next Embroidery tut = you'll have a LOT of stitch tubes and keeping them together will make your PSP-life and your Picture Tube Tool much easier)

*Go to Your Documents/My PSP Files (or make a Folder named My PSP Files - make new folders, there, for your various PSP sub-folders) > Picture Tubes > File > Add a New Folder = named 'Embroidery' > Add the Stitch Files to that Embroidery Folder

At PSP = Picture Tube - Open the drop down menu and select the Embroidery Folder (remember to point to this folder via Preferences)

This is just an example of how you might use this Satin Stitch.  The freedom to use any fabric, design, font, etc. is all yours.

1.  Open a large canvas.. mine is 600X400

Open the 'Pocket' and copy to your new canvas As a New Layer=Name it 'Pocket'

2. Open the 'Denim' pattern swatch

  • Shift/D to make a copy
  • At one - Duplicate the denim layer
  • At the 'Copy of' layer - change the blend mode to 'Screen *for a faded denim look
  •

You'll find both Denim now - at your Patterns

3.   At the bottom layer/Layer Palette :

Preset shape tool set to Rounded Rectangle..**or what shape you prefer

  • Line Width = 2
  • Linestyle =  Opposing Arrowheads - Overlap
  • Foreground Style = Pattern/Light Denim    Angle = 0    Scale=100
  • Background Style = Pattern/Denim    Angle = 0    Scale=100

  • pull out a shape
  • use the nodes to adjust to your liking
  • move your pocket to where you'd like it =  in reference to the shape underneath

here's mine (resized for screenshot) :  *notice I've centered both in the canvas = you'll need room for the 'tattered edge'  - you may have to increase the size of your canvas/width

  • Convert to Raster
  • Rename the layer to 'Fabric'

4.  Because your shape was a Vector - you should have an empty Raster layer at the bottom = highlight it

  • Rename it to 'Fringe'
  • Open your Picture Tube tool
  • Select 'raeSatinStitch02'  **important..  make sure to take #02
  • Change the Tool's Selection Mode to > Random

Near the right-side of the pocket/at the edge of the shape :

  • Click at the very edge of the shape
  • move to the far right  > just before the corner
  • Hold Shift and Click again > depositing a line of tatters
  • Continue Holding Shift > click around the corner
  • again > to the bottom right near corner
  • around the corner
  • **see the following diagram

Now..  you'll want to move your cursor/click off the bottom edge ..  approximately to where I show in the diagram.  This is done so that the tatters will place correctly **go ahead and try - you'll see what I mean

  • if you like - change the Step number to 4 (increasing the Step number increases distance between the tube cells) > add some tatters at the pocket top

5.  Now.. at your 'Fringe' layer :

  • Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colorize :

  • Duplicate
  • at the 'Copy of' layer > change the Blend Mode to 'Screen'
  • drop the transparency to approx 48

mine looks like this, now (resized for screenshot) :

6.  Now it's time for us to select what fonts we want to use.  This will be your choice - there are many fabulous Decorative Initials out there for the pocket (see the links at Supply Info*above)..as well as small case or a script, etc. for the remainder of your name.  Because you're creating your text as a Vector - you can adjust the size/length.

Before you Open your Text Tool > at your Layer Palette > Vector layer (Fabric)  = Convert to Raster

Move to the topmost layer at the palette > Open your Text Tool :

  • Create as Vector
  • I'm using font 'Kanzlei-Initialen'    ..  for my pocket initial
  • Font Size = enter 120
  • Foreground Style = Null
  • Background = I chose a soft blue - #D1D6E2
  • Enter your Initial
  • With the nodes and handle > move and tilt your initial > adjust Height and Width to fit pocket

Here's mine :

  • Now select your Font for the remainder of your name.. it can be caps, as in my case *short name  .. otherwise find a nice script.. or something that compliments your Initial
  • My choice is font 'ExtraOrnamentalNo2'   .. *uses only CAPS
  • I used the corner Vector nodes to push in and shape my text > Hold Shift at the corner nodes > the corner node will 'slant' > now you can pull/push Up, Down, Out, and In at angles

  • I then chose a Ding for extra ornamentation (*Font = 'DecoDividers' ..*only CAPS  ..  mine is letter O ..Size 36) ..  you can use aother ding .. or a shape..whatever you like > use the same color as Font Color *Foreground Null
  • Convert to Raster > Rename the layer to 'Text Color'

Here's what mine looks like now :

**note that my tag-screenshot, here and following, don't match my final tag.. I didn't like how I placed the scroll and changed it out for the example tag = which opens this tutorial

7.  Time to have fun!  Time to make our embroidery :

  • Text layer > Select All Float
  • While Active > Add a New Raster layer = name it 'Stitch'

To make the next few steps easier for you  = we'll remove the marching ants so that you can apply the embroidery and not be hindered by the visual ants :

  • Selections > Hide Marquee
  • **it's still Floating  ..  still an Active Selection.. but you simply can't see the ants

Open your Picture Tube Tool :

  • Select 'raeSatinStitch01'  ..  leave settings as I have them
  • click into your new layer > run from top=down ..over and over until you've covered your text in full  **it can't hurt to Zoom In first
  • Mostly, at this point, we want to be sure to apply the stitch to all the 'ornamental squiggly' parts of the text
  • Now, take your time and apply the stitch over the bolder portions of your text.  Use the tube from Top=Down for the best appearance > apply the tube strokes from the right side of your canvas/text = down.. curving them **look at the Sample Stitch in the supply folder.. apply the next stroke to the Left of the previous..
  • continue to apply from the Right to the Left ..start at Top=Down for each stroke of stitches..  concentrate on one letter at a time  .. Repeat the strokes until you get what you like

Don't fret..  when you see a pleasing set of stitching.. move to the next letter *it takes a few runs of the stitching to get a feel for the flow and for your movements to loosen up

Here's mine :

  • Highlight the topmost layer * your Stitches layer
  • Apply this Inner Bevel :

One more thing...

  • At your Stitches layer *topmost..
  • Change the Blend Mode to 'Luminance L'

8.  Now.. your Marquee is still hidden... you may unhide it > Selections > Hide Marquee, again  .. enabling it

  • Keep Selection Active
  • Highlight your 'Pocket' layer > Add a New Raster layer *not shown > Name it 'Shadow'

  • Keep Selection Active > Apply Drop Shadow at your 'Shadow' layer:

  • Change the Blend Mode at the Drop Shadow layer to 'Luminance' **important! for realism

8.  Here's mine :

OK!  you're done..

..and now's the time to tell you this = if you'd like to, you can change the color of your embroidery by > Adjust > Hue and Saturation > Colorize  ..  at your Text Color layer..   **the 'Font'  layer under your Stitches and above your Drop Shadow

for example :  *I colored portions by hand > Float text color layer and use your paintbrush

If you feel Wild..  select out portions and colorize them independently..  like this :

.. or decorate with flowery fonts > these are floated and colored with paintbrush

..  dare to be different..    try a small case for your text/other than the pocket Initial..maybe a pretty script?.. try a sharply outlined brush (float it and add a new layer for the stitches)..  play with pretty fonts.  Decorate with Dings..  with a flower shape..  patch your jeans with fabric swatches like we did in our Hippie Days

Play with backgounds and fabrics - you don't need to use Denim or Weaves, as shown..  go your own route

Stay Tuned for another Embroidery Tut = using loop stitches **"I'm in Stitches 02"
